Developing
And Writing A Successful Short Story
Do you yearn to write effective short prose, but struggle to find
the path from your initial idea to a successful final written
version? With an emphasis on taking stories from life and personal
experience, this course will throw light on story structure, narrative
techniques and that all-important editing process. It is open
to anybody who has the urge to pick up a pen, and previous writing
experience is not required. Autumn Term 2001. Wednesdays, 6.30
- 8.30 pm. 7 November to 12 December (6 meetings). Fees: £40

Basics
Of Successful Storytelling
Are some of your earliest and most treasured memories in the stories
you were told, by grandparents, parents or at school? Come and
learn the techniques that will enable you to tell a story to engage
any audience, large or small, young or old. The course will focus
on memory techniques, narrative structure, improvisation and delivery,
and is open to everyone who wishes to demystify that most empowering
cultural phenomenon that is storytelling. Spring Term 2002. Wednesdays,
6.30 - 8.30 pm. 16 January to 20 February (6 meetings). Fees:
£40 full / £34.50 ret / £22.50 conc

ARTS
COUNCIL OF ENGLAND WRITER'S AWARDS 2001/02
Guidelines
and application forms are now available from the Arts Council
for the above awards. There will be 15 awards of £7,000
each on offer, designed to 'buy time' for previously published
writers who are committed to a work in progress.
The
awards will be judged primarily on the literary merit of the work
in progress which can be poetry, fiction (including short stories),
autobiography, biography, literature for young people (excluding
picture books for very young children), drama (intended for publication),
and other literary works.
Writers
must be resident in England, should have had a least one literary
work previously published in book form and have embarked on a
new literary work.

CHASING
THE RAINBOW
BBC
Radio Four is looking once again for new drama writers of African,
Caribbean or Asian origin to develop their work for broadcast.
This unique collaboration between the BBC, East Midlands Arts
and West Midlands Arts, enables us to offer the opportunity for
up to six people to develop their scripts with the help of experienced
writers. We are looking for new writers whose work is informed
by their background or experience - not necessarily "Black"
or "Asian" plays. You will need to show us that you
can tell a good story, write convincing dialogue and develop engaging
characters.
To
apply: You must be over 18 years old, be of African, Caribbean
or Asian origin, and not previously had a radio play commissioned
or broadcast. You must live or work in either the East Midlands
region (Derbyshire - excluding the High Peak District, Leicestershire,
Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland) or
the West Midlands Arts region (Herefordshire, Worcestershire,
Shropshire, the Wrekin, Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent, Warwickshire
and the 7 Metropolitan Districts of the West Midlands. You will
need to send either a completed script or an outline of your idea
or treatment, with three completed scenes. Don't worry if you
are unsure about the format. Only one script/idea per entrant.
