Catherine Byron

The Renderers (Poem)

Journal Index (Feb-July 1999)

Catherine Byron grew up in Belfast, but has lived in Scotland and England for the last thirty years. She writes mainly on Irish themes, and about the body: both human and animal. Her poetry and prose have been published widely in journals and anthologies in Britain, Ireland, Canada and the USA.

Recent publications include the prose book Out of Step: Pursuing Seamus Heaney to Purgatory (Bristol, 1992) and the poetry collections The Fat-Hen Field Hospital: Poems 1985-92 (Bristol, 1993) Settlements & Samhain (Bristol, 1993) The Three Shes, edited and translated into German by Hans Bernhard Schiff, (Dusseldorf 1994, parallel text). Forthcoming: The Getting of Vellum, from Blackwater Press of Leicester and Salmon Publishing of Cliffs of Moher, County Clare, 1999 (co-publication).

In 1997 she received an Arts Council of England Writer's Award for poetry, and in particular for collaborative work with Dublin-based artist-calligrapher Denis Brown, and in addition a BBC/ACE 'Write Out Loud: new writing for radio' commission.

In 1998 the Poetry Society commissioned her to write a long poem about a place of her choice for their national 'Poetry Places' project. This commission has been linked with trAce in order to enable her to explore the creative potential of writing for and with the Net. She is collaborating with the Norfolk-based painter and printmaker Eileen Coxon in the creation of the site.
